desértico ( deh-SEHR-tee-koh )

(adjective) desert; barren; deserted

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

How to post a picture

1: Me gustan mucho los colores desérticos, como el color teja y el color siena tostada.

I really like desert colors, such as burnt sienna and rust.

2: Las tierras desérticas se extendían por millas.

The barren lands stretched on for miles.

Hace años visité Calico Ghost Town, que está situado en el pequeño pueblo de Yermo, California. Yermo significa "desértico" lo que significa "abandonado" o desierto, o despoblado. Y es verdad, no podía conseguir ninguna foto de Yermo, pero obtener varias fotos del Calico Ghost town fue muy fácil.

A few years ago I visited Calico Ghost Town, that is located in the small town of Yermo California. "Yermo" means "abandoned" or "desolate" or un populated. And it is true. I could not get any photos of Yermo, but obtaining some photos of Calico Ghost Town was easy.

Big Edit!

He encontrado algunas fotos of Yermo. La primera es el primer sitio del primer Restaurante "Del Taco" en Los EEUU. La segunda muestra algo del centro.

Un jardín desértico puede ser muy bello, pero es cierto que allí solo las plantas especiales pueden sobrevivir.

A desert garden can be very beautiful, but it is true that only special plants can survive there.

J: I could be wrong, but in this context I think you should use aparecer. While paracer can mean appeared I think that is only when you could substitute "seemed" in English - DilKen, Mar 14, 2017
J: It seems to me that either aparcer or parecer would work with the adjective ominosa with the imperfect, but only the preterite of aparecer would work with the adverb ominosamente. Get my drift? - DilKen, Mar 14, 2017
Unless, of course you meant that the ship used to frequently appear ominously on the horizon...which isn't what you wrote in English. - DilKen, Mar 14, 2017
So, just to be clear, I think you should change parecía to apareció. :") - DilKen, Mar 14, 2017
Spooky! - rac1, Mar 14, 2017

After the war the land was deserted. Leaving nothing but human remains and the lingering scent of smoke and decay to haunt it's wretched lands.

Hola Nick. Do you have an extra "de" in the sentence (after guerrra).. Also, should it be las tierras desdichadas? Also...are you missing a word in the Spanish for "to haunt"? - DilKen, Mar 14, 2017
Thanks mate. I was in a hurry to post. - Nickelbackfan1, Mar 14, 2017

Aunque los que sabemos qué es un camaleón de verdad normalmente pensamos que es un animal que vive en un selva tropical, hay una especie que puede sobrevivir en un clima desértico, incluso uno muy árido.

Although those of us that truly know what a chameleon really is normally think that it is an animal that lives in a tropical forest, there is a species that can survive in a desert climate, including a very arid one.

Desertado el pueblo, iba convirtiéndose en un verdadero pueblo fantasma.

Now that the village was deserted, it was gradually becoming a true ghost town.

With this Spanish sentence I'm trying out some grammar that I've been studying. Could the Spanish experts here let me know if this sentence is OK? If it is...is it the kind of thing you might read in a newspaper or magazine or is it quite "literary." The grammar elements I'm speaking of are starting a sentence with a past participle and the use of "ir" in the imperfect with the gerundio to mean that something was occurring little by little or gradually in the past.

Ahora la superficie de Marte es muy desértica, aunque hay evidencia de aqua en su historia.

Now the surface of Mars is very desert-like, although there is evidence of water in its history.

enter image description here

Mars once had a strong magnetic field—like Earth does now—produced by a dynamo effect from its interior heat. But as the smaller planet cooled, Mars lost its magnetic field some time around 4.2 billion years ago, scientists say. During the next several hundred million years, the Sun’s powerful solar wind stripped particles away from the unprotected Martian atmosphere at a rate 100 to 1,000 times greater than that of today.

Just looked into it. Ideas of Mars, smaller than earth, got pummled with meteorites that created holes in the sky and a loss of atmoshpere into space. Also, atmosphere could've seeped into soil. - Sassette, Mar 14, 2017
Well, I'm lost on that one. jejeje - rac1, Mar 14, 2017
