ondular ( ohn-doo-LAHR )

(verb) to ripple, to undulate; to wave

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1: El agua del lago ondulaba, haciendo que el reflejo de los árboles pareciera un cuadro impresionista.

The lake water rippled, making the reflection of the trees look like an impressionist painting.

2: La bandera sobre el castillo ondulaba con la brisa marina.

The flag over the castle waved in the sea breeze.

Thanks for opening up the word of the day when you did. It gave me something to look forward to after working out. I think an "r" works better than an "h" in the first frame of the snoop cartoon. :) - Sassette, Mar 10, 2017

Si alguien hubiera ondulado el agua cuando Narciso miró en la piscina, podía haber salvado al mundo del muchos problemas.

If someone had rippled the water when Narcissus looked into the pool, it might have saved the world a lot of trouble.

Cuando el aire ondula, crea sonidos. Después de tantos años de tocar y escuchar música, todavía es un misterio.

Me siento muy patriótica cuando veo la bandera de mi país la que ondulando en el viento.

I feel very patriotic when I see my country's flag wave in the wind.

Thanks to Ken and bosque for input. I'm open to any other suggestions. At the very least I think "que" needed to be added. smile

:) - bosquederoble, Mar 10, 2017
And that is the biggest question I've been looking into...que or la que? It just seems like there's not enough distance between flag and wave to need the la...but I don't know if that has anything to do with it. - Sassette, Mar 10, 2017
Sassette...I think there is enough distance...it also avoids the potential ambiguity that the country is waving in the wind. LA QUE would clearly refer to the preceding feminine noun. BTW I like ondulando better, just like Bosque. - DilKen, Mar 10, 2017
I agree is enough distance to justify it, but knowing the context might allow a native to drop it, note I used probablemente in what I said. :) - bosquederoble, Mar 10, 2017
@ken But tthe country is also waving in the wind. lol - Sassette, Mar 10, 2017

Me gusta ver la agua empezar a ondular sobre el lago cuando se lanza un barco. . I like to see the water start to ripple over the lake when a boat is launched.

¿Por qué, cuando pienso en la palabra ondular, el primer piensamiento que me viene a mente es de Sophia Vergara? Tal vez sea que su peinado es a menudo al estilo ondulado. Por otro lado, quizas sea porque Sophia es de Columbia, que es un país muy montañoso. ¿Quién sabe?

Why, when I think of the word "ondular", the first thought that comes to mind is Sophia Vergara? Maybe it's that she often wears her hair in a very wavy style. On the other hand, it could be because she is from Columbia, which is a very mountainous country. Who knows?

In competition swimmers are allowed to underwater dolphin kick and must resurface before 15 meters after start and turns.

En competición, los nadadores tienen permitido ondular debajo del agua y deben salir a la superficie antes de 15 metros después de la partida y los virajes.

(In swimming is more common to refer to the dolphin kick technic as "ondulación").

Michael Phelps's dolphin kick "La ondulación de Michael Phelps" "La patada de delfín de Michael Phelps" Both are correct, the first is more common. enter image description here

A través del aire del desierto que ondalaba debido al calor, vio los cuerpos ondulantes de los pingüinos mientras caminaban hacia las olas del mar, y una oleada de emoción se apoderó de él cuando pensó en que tan raro un lugar visitaba.

Through the desert air that was undulating from the heat, he saw the undulating bodies of the penguins as they walked towards the waves of the sea, and a wave of emotion washed over him when he thought about what a strange place he was visiting.

Fue al salón de belleza para que le ondularan el pelo con la permanente, porque no le gustaba su cabello lacio

She went to the beauty parlor to get a permanent wavy hairstyle, because she didn't like her straight hair.

@Bosque: You are right! grin

There is a curious idiom in Spain: "¡Anda y que te ondulen con la permanén!" (get your hair curled!), meaning get lost!, get out of here, and don't come back!

Isn't that the way it is- those with straight hair get it curled, and those with curly hair get it straightened. Thank you for showing how to put that in Spanish. :) - bosquederoble, Mar 10, 2017
I could be wrong here but I think it would be more natural if you wrote "to get a perm." I think that says it all.:) - Sassette, Mar 10, 2017

"Undulate" is a fun word to say. "Ripple"; not so much.

"Ondulados" es una palabra que decir. "Ondulación"; no tanto.
