'al' is a conjugation of 'a el' (i.e. a + el = al). You can use 'al' when the noun is masculine.
It sounds "funky" if we say '¿Tus amigos juegan a el fútbol?' when we can say 'Tus amigos juegan al fútbol?'
Hopefully, this makes a little more sense!
