Descargar vs Bajar

Question

Hi everyone. As a word in computing meaning "download", could anybody advise if there's a difference between "bajar" and "descargar" ?

Both would be synonyms according to my Spanish teacher. However, "descargar" is a bit less informal and would be used more often in websites, whereas "bajar" would be used more often in conversation. Hope it helps.

You can trust Astotxua's comment. In case you want a bit more information:

I Googled "descargar el archivo" and got about 1,760,000 results.
I Googled "bajar el archivo" and got about 313,000 results.

Obviously, both are in wide use, but one much wider than the other.

The RAE still identifies both descargar and bajar as informal ways of saying transferir (información) desde un sistema electrónico a otro.
