Unless necessary for clarification or emphasis, omit the yo. - jtaniel, Feb 12, 2017

Normally you will not use yo with soy or estoy, as that is contained in the conjugation and subject pronouns are usually not obligatory in Spanish, but sometimes you need it- for contrast or emphasis.

For instance:

¿Son ustedes médicos?

Pedro es médico, pero yo soy bombero.

Here it forms a nice contrast with Pedro.

Just my opinion as a fellow learner.
