Most sports are male nouns in Spanish (el tennis, el rugby, el balonmano, el béisbol) you can pick one from these to put it the blank. However sports names ending in "ING" or "A" are females (la natación, la gimnasia, la esgrima, la equitación).
Note: there is always room for exceptions.
