Preterite Meaning Changes: Querer and Tener?

Preterite Meaning Changes: Querer and Tener?

"Querer" in the Preterite means "tried", or if negative (with 'no') then it means "refused". But what if I wanted to say "I wanted it in that moment."? For example:

"As I was walking I came across an ice cream shop. For an instant I wanted ice cream, but then I remembered my diet."

Because there was a specific instant that the ice cream was wanted, could the Preterite be used here?

"Tener" in the Preterite means "got/received" - is this correct? But what if I wanted to say "I had it for X years."? For example:

"I had that dog for 10 years."

Because duration is stated, could the Preterite be used here?

Thank you!

The "imperfect" tense is correct in both cases. If you switch to the preterite in either case you get the alternative meaning which you don't want.
