Architecture vocab resources

Question

Hi!

I am interning as a translator for an American architect who does a lot of work in Latin America, and my architectural vocabulary (in English and Spanish but especially in Spanish) is severely lacking. I'm translating the notes on design sketches, presentations about the materials needed, letters between the designers and various governmental agencies in various countries that need to sign off on permits. If anyone can recommend resources where I can find architecture-related vocabulary I would very much appreciate it.

There must be a glossary kept by the American Society for Architects - the USA equivalent of RIBA.

Here is a page on PROZ a forum of professional translators, good for difficult words plus they have an alphabetical list.

I have a pictorial bilingual dictionary by Dorling Kindersley. If I look a word up on google I often check images - you can put + espanol or + Mexico etc to check it is the correct thing.

Surely your company must know or have suitable resources?

I would recommend translating the words on SpanishDict. I would then make note cards with the new words that you learn. This will help you learn them and always have them on hand for the future. I would also cross reference the other translators and you can probably fine a Spanish kids architecture book online. It may seem childish but it will most likely teach you basic stuff and most likely will be very accurate.
