lanzarse ( lahn-sahr'-seh )

verb ( to undertake, to embark upon )

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Happy New Year, Ambette. I'll have to take that saying in your graphic very seriously if I'm going to achieve anything this year. - Sassette, Jan 1, 2017
You can do it!! :) - rac1, Jan 1, 2017

Hace unos años me lanzé a aprender español y todavía voy a las clases y trato de practicar todos los días. Es más difícil de lo que me di cuenta.

Some years ago I embarked on learning Spanish and I still go to classes and try to practice each day. It is more difficult than I realised.

Good for you. Keep up the good work. - Daniela2041, Jan 2, 2017
I think it's because we start learning the grammar part first, instead of learning to speak first. - rac1, Jan 2, 2017

Es difícil creer que el iPhone se lanzó hace menos que diez años; ha cambiado tanto al mundo.

It is difficult to believe that the iPhone was launched less than ten years ago; it has changed the world so much.

It has. Everyone walks around and sits around glued to the screens of their phones. I feel like I'm the only one without a smartphone :( I can't afford it. - Sassette, Jan 1, 2017

Él se lanzó a la piscina y ahora reflexiona qué vaya a hacer; va a salir trepando o va a disfrutar del agua tibia .

He threw himself into the pool and now reflects what he is going to do; Is going to climb out or going to enjoy the warm water.

Lovely idea for a sentence, Porcu! Small English correction: is 'He' going to climb out or etc...The personal pronoun is needed here, Porcu I hope this helps :) - FELIZ77, Jan 1, 2017
you could also say: " now he is reflecting what he is going to do. - FELIZ77, Jan 1, 2017
Spanish: ¿Va a salir ....o..... ? You need question marks to show that he is asking himself which of the two options he is going to choose! I hope this helps :) - FELIZ77, Jan 1, 2017
Hola amiga. Thanks, Feliz. :):) - rac1, Jan 1, 2017

enter image description here Day 1

Colin embarked upon a project to tidy his house in January 2017 ...but .his worried next door neighbours called the police four weeks later and told them that the last time they saw him ...he was buried under a mountain of paper! wink

enter image description here Day 2

¡Colin se lanzó un proyecto para organizar (arreglar) su casa en enero 2017, pero sus vecinos preocupados de al lado llamaron a la policía después* de cuatro semanas y les dijeron que la última vez que le vieron, fue enterrado debajo de un montón de papeles! wink

Perhaps: cuatro semanas más tarde* would be better (?)

Editor's note/s: I have decided to intentionally include a series of 5 pictures to show the sequence (progression) of events from Colin's first day until his unfortunate disappearnce! I hope that have succeeded in injecting some gentle humour into a situation that is common to many of us ...being (or feeling) overwhelmed by mounatins of paperwork! The moral of my caption is: 'Look before you leap! (picture 2) Seriosuly, before attempting to deal with paperwork, please don't take on too much at once or warn your friends and family and keep your phone close to you in case you get lost lol! wink

Anoche mi esposa y yo vimos el balón descendió en Nueva York a las nueve en CNN, y le dije que fue el mismo descenso que iba íbamos a ver en ABC a la medianoche, y me preguntó cómo podía ser. Le dije que tenía algo que ver con la relatividad y viaje a través del tiempo, y me dijo que podía ser que la botella de champán se lanzara contra mi cabeza, pero por fin decidió que era más importante que algún champán se quedaran para la medianoche.

Last night my wife and I watched the ball descend in New York at nine on CNN, and I told her that it was the same descent we were going to see on ABC at midnight, and she asked me how that could be. I told her it had something to do with relativity and time travel, and she told me that the bottle of champagne might be launched against my head, but in the end decided that it was more important that some champagne remain for midnight.

I love your post, Bosque :) - FELIZ77, Jan 1, 2017
Bosque, a small typo: que ibamos (not iba) a ver = that WE were going to see :) - FELIZ77, Jan 1, 2017
You might have changed the English from I to we in the English version but forgot to change the Spanish ;) - FELIZ77, Jan 1, 2017
Self-Correction: Sorry, I forgot the accent on the verb, should be: íbamos a ver :) - FELIZ77, Jan 1, 2017
No, it was simply and error on my part, thanks Feliz. :) - bosquederoble, Jan 1, 2017
You are welcome, Bosque :) - FELIZ77, Jan 2, 2017
I see I also put "and error" not "an error". I am on a roll. :) - bosquederoble, Jan 2, 2017
