noun ( solstice )

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Hace cuatro años, muchas personas creían que el mundo terminaria en el momento preciso del solsticio de invierno, porque esa era la "fecha final" del calendario Maya.

Four years ago, many people believed that the world would end at the precise moment of the winter solstice, because that was the "end date" of the Mayan calendar.

My calendar usually ends each year, so I guess I live year to year. :) - bosquederoble, Dec 21, 2016
I live year to year as well. :) - rac1, Dec 21, 2016
If the world came to an end four years ago then the Cubs never would've won the World Series this year. - Sassette, Dec 21, 2016
That would have been a tragedy, no wonder reality continued. :) - bosquederoble, Dec 21, 2016
Hahahahahahahahhahaha Bosque, that was a good one! You to Sassette. :):) - rac1, Dec 21, 2016

El dictador soviético Stalin nació en 21 de diciembre en el día de solsticio de invierno y nosostros que habíamos vivido bajo su dictadura , hubimos dicho que este día era el más oscuro del año siempre ( el peor dia).

The Soviet dictator Stalin was born on December 21 on the day of winter solstice and we, who had lived under his dictatorship, we said that this day was the darkest of the year always (the worst day).

The winter solstice celebration is one of the oldest winter celebrations. Many people gather for this event, and some even light up lanterns to celebrate.

La celebración del solsticio de invierno es una de las más antiguas celebraciones de invierno.Muchas personas se reúnen para este evento, y algunos incluso encienden faroles a celebrar.

I would omit, "this day".... but it's not incorrect. :) - rac1, Dec 21, 2016
Thanks amiga. - Nickelbackfan1, Dec 21, 2016
It's not a coincidence that Christmas is celebrated so close to the solstice :-)! - Jraider, Dec 21, 2016
:) - Sassette, Dec 21, 2016
I wonder if it should be para celebrar instead of a celebrar. I always looked at para as meaning "in order to" which is what you are conveying. Maybe someone can comment on this. - Sassette, Dec 21, 2016
Based on limited research it looks like both "para" and "a" can be used to mean to celebrate. What "in between words" to use in Spanish is so confusing to me. - Sassette, Dec 21, 2016
Thank you for helping, Sassette. :) - rac1, Dec 21, 2016
Lol, I'm confused now. Thanks amiga. :) - Nickelbackfan1, Dec 21, 2016
I think I always am though. - Nickelbackfan1, Dec 21, 2016

El 21 de Diciembre es el solsticio de invierno en el hemisferio norte,

pero donde vivo en el hemisferio sur es el sosticio de verano ,el día más largo.

December 21 is the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere,

but where I live in the southern hemisphere it is the summer solstice, the longest day.

lol. I admit that the $49.00 is very high priced. From time to time Missy's Boutique will donate to charitable causes as was mentioned in one of the previous ads. lol - Sassette, Dec 21, 2016
I think it is worth that. Try finding one that's really nice and you will pay more. True! - rac1, Dec 21, 2016

Hace muchos años fui a Stonehenge con mi madre y mi hermana unos pocos días antes del solsticio de verano y ya había mucha gente acampada allí para celebrarlo. Fui allí de nuevo este siglo con mi esposa y sus tíos, pero ese viaje ocurrió durante julio.

Many years ago I went to Stonehenge with my mother and my sister a few days before the summer solstice and there were already a lot of people camped there in order to celebrate it. I went there again this century with my wife and her aunt and uncle, but that trip happened during July.

He aquí una foto de mi madre:

I thought it very cool. Clearly civilization back then was more advanced than we give them credit for. :) - bosquederoble, Dec 21, 2016
As I look at the two pictures, it is weird that the grass is yellow in the picture in late June, but green in mid July. But the first picture is 1984, and the second is 2003. :) - bosquederoble, Dec 21, 2016

Cada año en el solsticio de invierno, me quemo un registro de "yule", y con el, mis malos recuerdos del año pasado.

Every year on the winter solstice I burn a yule log, and with it, my bad memories from the past year.

Ray ya les ha dicho a ustedes que en Australia tenemos el solsticio de verano. Los días son tan largos que los niños no quieren acostarles porque todavía hay luz en el cielo.

Ray has already told you that in Australia we have the summer solstice. The days are so long that children don't want to go to bed because there is still light in the sky.
