Qué es lo que ocurrió con ese lobo? "What happened to that wolf?"
That is part of a dialogue I am reading. If I wanted to say that same thing I would just say "Qué occurió con ese lobo." whats with all the extra words? What does "es lo que" add to the sentence?

The "lo que" part is "that which" What is (that which) occured with that wolf:
As a native speaker I would prefer using an indirect object. ¿Qué le ocurrió a ese lobo? which is (to me) preferred usage, and It is even a little closer to the English.

es lo que = is it that
What is it that happened to that wolf?
