How do I answer “¿Qué te gusta?”

Welcome to the forum.

“Gustar” is a verb that is used in many (but not all) of the situations that “like” is used in English. In the way it works, it is most similar to “is pleasing to”.

Qué= What

Te= to you

Gusta= is pleasing

So it equates with the English thought: What do you like?

Gustar is conjugated to what does the pleasing, the things you like, which are the subject even though they normally follow the verb.

So you would answer “Me gusta…” or “Me gustan…” followed by what you like.

Here is a link to help you decide whether to choose gusta, or gustan, depending on what you put after it:

If you post your attempt, someone may help you correct it, if it needs that.

This is good instruction on "gustar" but the way the OP phrased his question I didn't know what he was getting at. See my post. - Daniela2041, Dec 20, 2016
Yes, that is why I put a properly phrased version at the start of my answer. - bosquederoble, Dec 20, 2016
Or at least it was the question I decided to answer I guess. I do think it is most likely what they wanted to know. :D - bosquederoble, Dec 21, 2016

The way the question is worded (incorrectly) threw me off completely.

When used as a question word "qué" must have an accent mark because it is a stressed syllable in a phrase.

with "que te gusta" the first syllable "que" the second "te" are both enclytics. (non-stressed syllables) the first stressed syllable is "gus." When I read words I also hear them in my head. Without the accent mark on "qué" I don't hear it as a question, but rather as a part of a sentence with the main part missing.

Please use proper accentuation when writing Spanish, if you know how.

True. "La cosa que te gusta más es..." would be such a sentence I think. :) - bosquederoble, Dec 21, 2016
And I would read "Que (without an accent) te gusta el regalo" as "May you like the gift!" - AnnRon, Dec 21, 2016
Any combination is possible. EX. "Esta es la canción que te gusta." - Daniela2041, Dec 21, 2016
