Hola!

I came across quite a few possible translations for the word "membership" and would like to know what is most commonly used in Spain.

For example: "When my gym / library / Netflix membership runs out, I'm going to..."

Any help much appreciated!

Many thanks, Rangi

A quick look in a dictionary answers this. - Oshnaj, Dec 6, 2016
Indeed. - Daniela2041, Dec 6, 2016
The dictionary has at least two direct translations as well as some "no direct translation" entries. I'm asking what the common way to say this in Spain is. If you believe the dictionary answers this, please just let me know the answer. Gracias :-) - Rangi, Dec 6, 2016
I hope you got the answer you were looking for. Sorry about that. - rac1, Dec 6, 2016

In Mexico and most of Latin America, "membresía" is the word.

In Spain, (astotxua please correct me) I think that it's "afiliación."

Members may be called (in Latin America) miembros. In Spain I believe that it"s

"socios" o "afiliados"

I just checked our Translator and these meanings are refined even further. Here's what I found.

(members)

a. los socios (m), las socias (f) (of a club or society) The majority of our membership are older people.La mayoría de nuestros socios son personas mayores.

b. los afiliados (m), las afiliadas (f) (of a trade union or party) We shall have to consult the membership on this issue.Vamos a tener que consultar a los afiliados sobre este asunto.

c. los miembros (m), las miembros (f) (of a committee or organización) The commission was in crisis when its entire membership resigned en masse.La comisión atravesó una crisis tras la renuncia en bloque de todos sus miembros.

d. la membresía (f) (Central America) (Mexico) The whole membership was in favor of the proposal.Toda la membresía estaba a favor de la propuesta.

  1. (number of members) a. el número de socios (m) (of a club or society) We need to increase our membership or the club will cease to exist.Necesitamos aumentar el número de socios; de otro modo, el club dejará de existir.

b. el número de afiliados (m) (of a trade union or party) In terms of membership, the party is now the second biggest in the country.En términos de número de afiliados, el partido ya es el segundo del país.

c. el número de miembros (m) (of a committee or organization) Membership of the EU increased from 15 to 28 countries.El número de miembros de la UE aumentó de 15 a 28 países.

Interesting, everything I have seen on that word indicates it is primarily applicable to Latin America. Could you fill out your profile so we can better judge your answer. :) - bosquederoble, Dec 6, 2016
