arce ( ahr'-seh )

noun ( maple, maple tree )

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

El arce japonés es uno de mis árboles favoritos. Sorprendentemente, crecen bien en el clima marítimo de Alaska donde vivo.

It's beaufiful...Are they all small like that? It reminds me of a bonsai. - rac1, Nov 18, 2016
It depends on the species. They vary from about 6' to about 25' tall when mature. - AnnRon, Nov 18, 2016
In the graphics program Illustrator they have a Japanese maple leaf as one its preset shapes that can be used in designs. - Sassette, Nov 18, 2016

Había inquietud en el bosque, había descontento entre los árboles, debido a que los arces querían más sol y los robles ignoraban sus pedidos. No estoy seguro de si con el calentamiento global los arces van a conseguir más luz, pero quizás consigan más calor.

There was unrest in the forest, there was trouble with the trees, for the maples wanted more sunlight and the oaks ignored their pleas. I am not sure whether with global warming the maples are going to get more light, but perhaps they will get more warmth.

Yes, that looks like a smurf trail :-)! - Jraider, Nov 17, 2016
Thanks, everyone. It is a Smurfy trail which Smurfs skipping around the brush. And good question, Nickelback. I haven't tried in a while. I'll try it again soon. - Sassette, Nov 17, 2016
I love the path and everything about this. Let me know if you still can't change your avatar. Try a smaller pic., just to see if that could be the problem. - rac1, Nov 17, 2016
Thanks, again, Ambette. And the avatar works, Nickleback and Ambette! The W is from the flag that is flown at Wrigley Field after a Cub victory. It's to celebrate the World Series win. - Sassette, Nov 17, 2016
By the way, I didn't have to change the size of my pic. Same exact graphic I was trying to change my avatar to before. It just works now. - Sassette, Nov 17, 2016
That's odd, at least it works now. - Nickelbackfan1, Nov 18, 2016

The maple tree leaned toward the house, its shadow made the property dark and ominous. It's branches held beautifully colored leaves that added a friendlier look to the home.

El arce se inclinó hacia la casa, la sombra hecha la propiedad oscura y siniestra son ramas sostenidas hojas maravillosamente coloreadas añadió una mirada más amistosa a la casa.

Please tell me if you see any errors, this was kind of a tricky sentence to work with. :) - Nickelbackfan1, Nov 17, 2016
Nickel...You need a period after "ominous", and "that" after "leaves"... :-)! - Jraider, Nov 17, 2016
Thanks mate. :) - Nickelbackfan1, Nov 17, 2016
I am honored to give the Princess of Picture of the day a badge. :) - Sassette, Nov 17, 2016
Lol. Thanks amiga. :) - Nickelbackfan1, Nov 17, 2016
Thanks, JR. I missed that. :) Good thing I have all of you to keep me on my toes. - rac1, Nov 17, 2016
Nick, you want "its" (no apostrophe), not "it's." "It's" means "it is," which obviously wouldn't make sense in your sentences. - AnnRon, Nov 17, 2016
Thanks Ann. - Nickelbackfan1, Nov 18, 2016
