There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

El árbol de abedul tasmbién se llama 'la dama del bosque'.

El árbol de abedul no es indígena de Australia

y se ve fuera de lugar en el medio ambiente.

The birch tree is also called the lady of the forest.

The Birch tree is not indigenous to Australia

and looks out of place in the environment.

¿Sería posible que La Sociedad John Birch se llame (en español) La Sociedad Juan Abedul? (Hmmmmm, el nombre sí parece un poco árabe.

Would it be possible that the John Birch Society would be called (in Spanish) The Juan Abedul Society? Hmmmmmm, the name sounds a little Arabic.

(Disclaimer: I am not a follower of JBS, nor their teachings. But everybody else was writing about TREES and I like to be a little "out-of the box.")

SpanishDict translates that word into "azotar." - LiuBang10, Nov 11, 2016
@ Luibang , you may find that "azotar" is an American Birch which is not actually a birch tree it is a different genus entirely. - ray76, Nov 14, 2016

Giving the birch as a punishment.

Dar el abedul como un castigo.

JUVENILE BIRCHINGS IN THE 1950s

For 12 years after that, birching was principally a punishment for boys under 15 convicted of petty larceny (stealing), much as in UK magistrates' courts before 1948. The penalty was considered fairly trivial, though I doubt whether it seemed all that trivial to those receiving it (8 or 9 strokes in a few cases, though 3 or 4 was the norm). At any rate, it attracted little attention and was often reported only briefly in the local papers and not at all on the mainland. There were 52 of these magistrates' court juvenile birchings from 1952 to 1959 inclusive -- an average of nearly seven per year.
