ofrenda ( oh-frehn'-dah )

noun ( offering; token )

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: Ya tenemos todo listo para hacer la ofrenda: cempasúchil, copal, pan, papel picado y una foto del difunto.

We've got everything ready for the offering: marigolds, copal, bread, and papel picado.

2: El muchacho le compuso una canción a la muchacha como ofrenda de su amor.

The boy wrote the girl a song as a token of his love.

More like the result of brainwashing by an agressive cult JR - something similar is running amok today. - ian-hill, Nov 4, 2016
When you read the New Testament you find out how much Jesus detested "religion." It's too bad that His followers have made a religion out of what can be a beautiful relationship. - Daniela2041, Nov 4, 2016
And to be honest, I think that the Buddha would also have a similar complaint regarding his followers. - Daniela2041, Nov 4, 2016
I agree with you, Dani. I was just reading the "woe to you's" yesterday. - rac1, Nov 4, 2016

La viuda ofreció una pequeña moneda, pero Jesús lo llama mayor una ofrenda más grande que las ofrendas de los ricos, porque tenían mucho a repuesto, pero ella dio todo el dinero que ella tenía. enter image description here The widow offered a small coin, but Jesus called it a greater offering than the offerings of the rich, because they had plenty to spare, but she gave all the money she had.

Most of the churches in America are small and struggling. There are a few lobos out there, however, whose only goal is to "fleece the sheep." - Daniela2041, Nov 4, 2016
Yep... It is a form of worship in itself. :) - rac1, Nov 4, 2016

Los miembros de un templo budista dejan una ofrenda de comida

para los monjes cada día. Una ofrenda de comida se llama 'dana'.

Los monjes no están autorizados a preparar su propia comida,

esto enseña humildad y gratitud.

Members of a Buddhist temple leave an offering of food for the monks every day ;

An offering of food is called dana

The monks are not allowed to prepare their own food , this teaches humility and gratitude

When there is too much food to offer singularly to each monk members will

lift the table to offer all the food , the monks cannot eat that which is not offered.

Las Les suelo dar una ofrenda de agua a mis plantas de interior cada dos semanas más o menos, quizás con una mejor frecuencia durante el verano, lo que las parece satisfacer, y a cambio, me dan un sentido de paz y armonía, y quizás un poco de oxígeno, y le dan a mi esposa hojas caídas y algo de lo que puede quejarse.

I usually give an offering of water to my house plants every two weeks more or less, perhaps more often during the summer, which seems to satisfy them, and in return they give me sense of peace and harmony, and perhaps a little oxygen, and they give my wife fallen leaves and something about which she can complain.

No matter what I do to my Ivy, it doesn't look right. I've replanted it in a larger thingy and I water it on time. I even give it food once in awhile. It's sitting in the right amount of light. :( - rac1, Nov 4, 2016
The only thing I've ever had luck with was a ficus tree. It looked great. It was full and tall. It sat in front of my living room window that was floor length. - rac1, Nov 4, 2016
People are more likely to overwater than underwater, but yes, a host of factors have to be considered. - bosquederoble, Nov 4, 2016
