There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: El cempasúchil florece después de la época de lluvias.

Marigolds flower after the rainy season.

2: Los alumnos trazaron un camino con el cempasúchil para que las almas encontraran la ofrenda.

The students made a path with marigolds so that the spirits could find their way to the offering.

Notes:

A loanword from Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, "cempasúchil" is also commonly spelled "cempazuchitl."

Siempre planta el cempasúchil entre los vegetales,

para proteger las raíces de las plagas

Always plant marigolds among the vegetables, to protect the roots from pests.

Growing marigolds adds a splash of color to your garden, is a great companion plant and provides natural pest deterrent.

Caléndula is also the name I knew. :) - bosquederoble, Nov 1, 2016
I think caléndula refers to the species Calendula officinalis and cempasúchil to the species Tagetes erecta, and the latter name is derived from nahuatl- cempohualxochitl. - bosquederoble, Nov 1, 2016
It must be an Aztec word :-)! - Jraider, Nov 1, 2016
Hmmm, well I don't know why, I'm sure they must have a good reason for using it. I hope. jejejeje - rac1, Nov 1, 2016
Bosque says that it's "Nahuatl" - Daniela2041, Nov 2, 2016

El cempasúchil es una planta anual que requiere mucho sol, y por eso no va bien en mi jardín, como mi casa es en una cuesta que da al norte y hay muchos árboles cerca.

Marigolds are annual plants that require a lot of sun, and so they don't go well in my garden, as my house is on a slope that faces north and there are many trees nearby.

Do you feel as though you are sloping when sitting in your living room? lol - rac1, Nov 1, 2016
My tomatoes don't get enough sun to ripen before the season is over anymore, the trees have grown up too much. :) - bosquederoble, Nov 1, 2016
I think I was a little askew when I took the picture, the house is flat. But the front entrance is on the top floor. Downstairs only exists in the back. - bosquederoble, Nov 1, 2016

¿Quién habría sospechado que el cempasúchi, aka, caléndula, tendría beneficios medicinales?

Who would have suspected that that the marigold aka caléndula would have medicinal benefits?

(The French says it's for irritated skin.)
