Both Reflexive and Reciprocal at the Same Time

Both Reflexive and Reciprocal at the Same Time

Hola!

Quick one:

Carla y María compraron pistolas para protegerse.

This can mean:

Carla and Maria bought pistols to protect themselves. (reflexive meaning) or

Carla and Maria bought pistols to protect each other. (reciprocal meaning)

Now, I want to say: Carla and Maria bought pistols to protect themselves and each other.

Is this then the way to go (Are there other ways? And which is more preferable?):

Carla y María compraron pistolas para protegerse a sí mismas y entre sí.

Now there's also:

Carla y María compraron pistolas para protegerse a sí mismas y la una a la otra.

...but doesn't this clarifying phrase get a bit too long?

EDIT: A google search with quotation marks using the masculine "a sí mismos y entre sí" gives 38% more hits than a search for the masculine "a sí mismos y el uno al otro". So I guess both can work just fine...

Thanks everybody grin Larry

Carla y María compraron pistolas para protegerse a sí mismas y entre sí.

Carla y María compraron pistolas para protegerse a sí mismas y la una a la otra.

Both are ok but if you prefer a shorter but less used ways.

..........para protegerse mutua y personalmente. Or personal y mutuamente

..........para protegerse personal y reciprocamente.

There exist other ways but longer than your examples.

.....pistolas como autoprotección y para protegerse entre ellas/la una a la otra/una a otra.

.....como protección personal y para protegerse entre sí/entre ellas/la una a la otra/ una a otra.
