Common word for Pond

I understand that different regions and Spanish speaking native use different words as with English speaking people. A fourth grader learning Spanish asked me for the word for ****pond****. I gave him the word "Charco". I then asked the two adults who are fluent in the language from different countries. One agreed with me, but another said she might us "lago pequeno". Does anyone, have any thoughts on a good word to refer to the word pond in Spanish. Spanish Dict and traditional dictionaries offer many suggestions. Please help if one has any suggestions.. Muchas gracias

We can say charco (which can also mean "puddle" or slang for "atlantic ocean") or charca ("pond" or small area of water in the ground only), or poza.

I have never heard lago pequeño used this way, it sounds more like an explanation rather than a synonum.

"Lago pequeño" sounds like what I would say if I did not know the correct word for "pond." - Winkfish, Oct 14, 2016
Thats funny because we use the word ';pond" for the sea between New Zealand and Australia , which is of corse 'slang'. - ray76, Oct 15, 2016

If it's real deep you can use "cenote(s)" which are found in the Yucatán Peninsula.
