How can I be a good Spanish tutor?

I’m kind of in a tight spot right now and decided to become a part-time tutor, but the thing is that I’ve never tutored before and I’m a little nervous. Any tips on how to be a good tutor and not stress myself or the student I am helping?

Oh and the best of luck, I have been where you are and remember that once I started it all fell into place , enjoy your students and they will enjoy you and eventually have respect for you. - ray76, Oct 14, 2016

As you know, a foreign language student is assigned reading matter in a textbook. There are also in many cases a workbook or "manual de ejercicios" where written practice is done.
So you are not responsible for the material---what the student is supposed to learn. The classroom teacher guides the class through the lessons. The tutor's job is to help the student understand the material that was presented to him/her and give that student spoken practice, help and explanations with the written exercises.

If you know the subject well, there is no reason for stress or distress. It's quite easy. I provide time in my classes for students to "tutor" each other. It's amazing how much students can learn from students---and even more from a caring tutor.

Good luck!

Thank you for answering! This relaxes me a little more. I thought I have to have the material needed to help people out, but this helps me understand more. Definitely feel more confident in my Spanish skills. Thanks again for answering! (: - lluvialockser, Oct 14, 2016
