Señora, se le ha caído la toalla del balcón.

Q1. I don't know what is ˜le˜ for in the above sentence?

Q2. If I leave le out, the meaning change?

I think that the above sentence can rewrite like "Señora, La toalla se le ha caído del balcón." But in this case I think le has no meaning..... I have no idea what is le like

Best regards.

The idea is that the towel got away from you (le) and fell from the balcony.

The construction is called "unexpected occurrence "

It's like this: Se + some indirect obj. pronoun (me, te, le. nos, les) + verb in the past.

Se me olvidó llamarte. "To call you forgot itself to me" or "It slipped my mind to call you."

¿Se te cayó la taza? (Did the cup get away from you?) --to avoid the accusation, "Did you drop the cup?"

le is working as the object pronoun you. (It stands for usted.) If removed, the meaning changes.

  1. Se le ha caído la toalla. (= a usted.)
  2. Se ha caído la toalla. (= no se le cayó a nadie.)
