Starting a sentence with 'because'?

Question

I know in that English, you could do this to begin a complex sentence. For example: Because she goes to university, we are distant.

Can you do the same in spanish?:

Porque ella va a la universidad, nosotros estamos desapegados.

No. It's not used.

Mainly, to express a motive, you leave that part in the middle of a paragraph, but you don't ever start it at the beginning.

I do not know for sure.

I was told once, quite a while ago, that you really should not start a sentence with porque, but that it was okay to start it with como. As such I often choose como, or debido a que to start a sentence instead of porque, but I think I have used porque to start a sentence a number of times since and not been called on it, so I really don't know if it was that particular person, or regional, or if it is a grammar thing that indicates the ideal, that not all follow, or if it is really something that should be followed.

I only post this in hopes of stimulating some opinions by native speakers.
