Call a taxi

Call a taxi

Spanish dictionary translates "call a taxi" as "llama (a) un taxi". Why is the "a" in parenthesis (a)? How would you say "We should call a taxi. Let's call one now"?

Here's my attempt: Debemos llamar un taxi. Vamos a llamar uno ahora.

In English, should is used to give advice. In Spanish, it happens the same.

Idiomatically,

call a taxi = llama/pide un taxi. The preposition a is in brackets because you can leave it off if you want to. The difference in meaning is minimal.

To end with,

  • We should call a taxi. (= deberíamos llamar/pedir un taxi.)
