Estar is used for a temporary condition or something that isn't permanent.Tired, happy, sad, etc. Ser is used for defining characteristics that are apart of you or are permanent. Tall, short, smart, etc.

Since you are saying you are usually tired, that means that it isn't permanent. You would say "Usualmente estoy cansado." If you said "Soy una persona cansada" that would imply that you are naturally a tired person; it is a permanent condition.

It's better to think "characteristics" -ser then "conditions" --estar. La puerta es grande---characteristic. La puerta está abierta---condition. - Daniela2041, Sep 23, 2016
