despistado ( dehs-pees-tah'-doh )

adjective ( absent-minded, forgetful; distracted )

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Mi esposa siempre dice que estoy despistado porque no recuerdo lo que va a hacer durante cualquier fin de semana, aunque sólo me dijo una vez cinco semanas antes- ella tiene un calendario en su laptop, y si yo lo pudiera chequear cada día, no parecería tan despistado.

My wife always says I am absent-minded because I don’t remember what she is going to do during any given weekend, although she only told me once five weeks earlier- she has a calendar on her laptop, and if I were able to check it every day, I would not appear so clueless.

Este hombre es despistado, pero puede ser que solamente la necesidad no le da otra elección.

This man is confused, but may be that only the need did not give him any choice.

Cuando me canso, me convierto despistada. Algunos lo llamen "madre del cerebro."

When I get tired, I become scatter-brained. Some call it "mom brain."

Vio a su suegra pero se hizo el despistado.

He pretended not to see his mother-in-law.

Sabes perfectamente de qué hablo, así es que no te hagas el despistado.

You know perfectly well what I’m talking about, so don’t pretend you don’t.

El dia se va rapido cuando estoy despitado en el trabajo, pero aveces estoy asi porque el trabajo no me diverte.

The day goes by quicky when I am absent-minded at work, but sometimes I am like that because the job does not entertain me.

I don't think many jobs are entertaining, maybe "interest" would be a better word to use in this sentence. - rac1, Sep 21, 2016
Errors. "día", "despistado," "así" and "divierte." And I think he means that his job is not "fun." - Daniela2041, Sep 21, 2016
Still, better to use "interests" because jobs are not meant to entertain one. - rac1, Sep 21, 2016
thank you Daniela. always helpful. - hunterr, Sep 22, 2016
and seeing as i did mean it as you interpreted it, is this correct use of 'divierte'? - hunterr, Sep 22, 2016

Es verdad que en nuestra vejez nos hacemos despistados. Nuestros cerebros ya son tan llenos que no hay espacio para nuevos datos.

It is true that in our old age we become absent-minded. Our brains are already so full that there is no space for new facts.
