I want to say "I forgot that I had to turn it in today" but I'm not sure if I should use tenia or tuve

I would probably use "debía" "Se me olvidó que se lo debía entregar hoy."
It slipped my mind that that I should have turned it in to (someone) today. ( It can also be done without the "se" )
(Since you haven't done your profile, I don't know what level your Spanish is, and don't know how advanced to make my answers. Since you know "tuve" and "tenía" I am going to assume high beginner.)
