Hello Spanish, welcome to our SpanishDict community! Please use correct punctuation, spelling and grammar on this site ...this is mandatory! - FELIZ77, Sep 14, 2016
Please complete your basic profile details! We need to know 1 your gender (Are you male/or female?) 2 your levels of ability in Spanish and English so we can know how best to help you! Thank you! :) - FELIZ77, Sep 14, 2016
Capitalise at all times we have members learning English/ Spanish , this is mandatory amigo.. - ray76, Sep 14, 2016
Have you tried putting it into the translator yet ? - ray76, Sep 14, 2016
Ray, please read my whole post, mate especially the end part where I share the results given by the translator ..they are nexxt to useless! - FELIZ77, Sep 15, 2016
I know Feliz, it is not the answer which is important it is the need to work and not just expect someone else to do it , the translator is the fishing line not the fish . - ray76, Sep 15, 2016
Yes, Ray I agree on principle provided that we give people a fishing rod that actually works properly...the translator often fails to help people! - FELIZ77, Sep 15, 2016
If I knew where I could quickly find a clock like the one you posted, I would have offered that in my post, instead! - FELIZ77, Sep 15, 2016
Feliz we both , or rather all of us help as we think is right , no way is best or bad just different , it is a shame that so few here are genuine students. - ray76, Sep 15, 2016

Hello Spanish,

Welcome to our SpanishDict community forum smile

You asked:

how do you write 5 minutes till 2 in spanish?

Well, firstly, this is how you write your question in English using correct punctuation, especially capital letters! wink

How do you write five minutes to two in Spanish, please?

Son las dos menos cinco = It is five minutes to two

The words Son las are used with every hour except one o' clock ;

Son las diez menos veinte = It is twenty (minutes) to ten

Son las diez y cinco = It is five minutes past ten

but, please take note, It is five minutes to one:

Es la hora menos cinco.

For the benefit of those people here who think that I should have offered the questioner a link to the translator so they could use that instead, this is what I received when I posted in these words: It is five minutes to two:

All the options / answers given by the translator machine below are wrong! / incorrect!!! The first two: Microsoft and SDL do not even use the correct verb: ser, which is used to talk about time! wink

Está a cinco minutos a dos (Microsoft) Está a cinco minutos a dos (SDL) Es dos menos cinco (Prompt)

I hope this helps you smile

Thank you for providing all this information. I understand that sometimes people don't even make an attempt to answer their own questions. However, I have seen people (not necessarily on SpanishDict) be incredibly rude when someone asks a question like - T_S_0503, Sep 14, 2016
this, thanks for being helpful. - T_S_0503, Sep 14, 2016
You are welcome T-s :) I try to encourage people to make an attempt to answer their own questions, but until they complete their basic profiles, it can be very difficult to know what what - FELIZ77, Sep 14, 2016
they are capable of, but, we will not do people's homework for them! We can explain to them what they must do. I try not to be rude , but I will use humour to get my point across wheenever necessary! ;) - FELIZ77, Sep 14, 2016
Correction: (typo) whenever - FELIZ77, Sep 14, 2016
Es la hora menos cinco -> Es la una menos cinco. - jtaniel, Sep 14, 2016
I'm not sure I agree with T_S_0503. I'm starting to feel that while someone who uses the name "spanishisdumb" and can't be bothered to construct a proper question doesn't deserve rudeness, he or she doesn't deserve much of an answer either. - jtaniel, Sep 14, 2016
Perhaps you are a better person than I, Feliz. - jtaniel, Sep 14, 2016
I did think it was a dumb user name lol - FELIZ77, Sep 14, 2016
Feliz, you are terrific. When I saw the user name I really got irked and felt like replying something nasty. but I just exited the site instead. "Refunfuñando" en voz alta. - Daniela2041, Sep 15, 2016
I object strongly to such names , it is rude and unnecessary, if someone posts as 'Aussiedumb" they will feel the weight of my tongue. - ray76, Sep 15, 2016
Ray, remember that Facebook thing that said we were Identical? - Daniela2041, Sep 15, 2016
Yes I do, maybe they were on the ball. - ray76, Sep 15, 2016

f you can count to 29 in Spanish and learn a handful of words, you can tell time.

The basic way of telling time in Spanish is to use the singular form of ser ("to be"), which is es, for one o'clock and the plural form, son, for other times. Minutes can be stated simply by separating them from the hour using y, the word for "and."

enter image description here

  • Es la una. It is 1:00

    • Es la una y dos. It is 1:02.

    • Son las dos. It is 2:00.

    • Son las tres. It is 3:00.

  • Son las seis y cinco. It is 6:05.

  • Son las siete y diez. It is 7:10.

    • Son las once y diecinueve. It is 11:19.

Hello Spanish,

While we at Spanishdict are pleased to help people who seriously want to learn and to improve their Spanish and English here, a great many of us find/will find your user name not only provacative but highly offensive!

The name you have chosen insults not only the language and Spanish culture but also all those who speak it, especially the native Spanish speakers!

We would therefore ask you most respectfully to change your user name as soon as possible ...if you do not, you are likely to find few if any people willing to answer your questions in future!

Anyway, why did you choose such a thoughtless and insensitive user name?!!!

If you don't like Spanish, why on earth are you learning it?

It sounds like you do not like this language and are being forced to learn it at school...is this true?

However you may feel about any language or the people who speak it, it makes absolutely no sense at all to cause offense to the native speakers or anyone else who loves the language; whether intentionally or unintentionally!

It probably isn't the best way to make new friends, either! wink

Well said mate , I could not have put it better , I feel very strongly about this , all too often we turn our backs at this type of insult but it is very offensive to many people. Thanks mate. - ray76, Sep 15, 2016
Thank you, Ray While I like to be respectful to people, there are times when others really overstep the mark that I feel the need to speak my mind and be very direct! You are welcome, Ray ! - FELIZ77, Sep 15, 2016

For minutes before the hour, you can also say for "twenty minutes to two"

"Faltan veinte minutos para las dos."

"Faltan (some number) minutos para las (hour). --except for "la una" Faltan once minutos para la una. (Some people even leave "minutos" out. I never do.
