I do not know this for sure but I can't help wondering if it is another way of saying:

Upon remembering what happened ...he 'threw up' (vomitted) Literally, he removed /emptied the stomach, ie: the contents of his stomach.

Idioms cannot be literally translated so I have also given my best intuitive guess! Of course, it may not be an idiom but I am not familiar with this verb and could not find it in my Oxford English/Spanish dictionary.

I am an intermediate level student so I suggest that you wait for a native/fluent speaker to confirm this!

The idiom is revolver el estómago.

Used when

1. vomit is imminent.
   Se me revolvió el estómago de tan solo pensar en esa comida.
2. the person you like (regarding love) appears.
   Cuando la vi, se me revolvió el estómago y no sabía qué hacer. (= this also means sentí mariposas en el estómago.)
3. fear is incoming.
   El ladrón me apuntó con el arma y se me revolvió el estómago del miedo.
