noun ( national anthem )

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Several national anthems bring tears to my eyes and pride in my heart after living in different countries.

Varios himnos nacionales traen lágrimas a mis ojos y orgullo en mi corazón después de vivir en países diferentes.

El himno nacional de Australia no es la elección popular del pueblo.

The national anthem of Australia is not the popular choice of the people.

Please watch this patriotic but antiwar song.

Waltzing Matilda is your N. A.? - rac1, Aug 20, 2016
No it isn't unfortunately , it is "Advance Australia Fair" . But the people wanted "Waltzing Matilda". - ray76, Aug 20, 2016
I just watched the entire video; it is very moving. It reflects on one of the most disastrous campaigns (for both sides) of World War I. - jrschenk, Aug 20, 2016
:) - ian-hill, Aug 20, 2016
Thanks Jrschenk, when I feel better I shall write you more about this disgusting disaster. - ray76, Aug 21, 2016
Sorry Ray but I disagree. I like Advance Australia Fair. Waltzing Matilda is a great folk song but unsuitable as an anthem. - jennysk, Aug 21, 2016

Nuestro himno nacional es muy lúgubre y triste y de todos modos corresponde a la historia tempestuosa de nuestro país.

Our national anthem is very mournful and sad, and anyway it corresponds to the tempestuous history of our country.

Los Estados Unidos debe su himno nacional al ataque británico sobre Fort McHenry en la batalla de 1812. Ellos hicieron el error de hacer esto mientras Frances Scott Key estaba mirando, y él escribió lo que vio. Recientemente descubrí que el apellido McHenry es uno de mis nombres ancestrales, y no a diferencia de los ciudadanos de muchos países, me lleno de orgullo cuando escucho el himno nacional de mi país.

The United States owes its national anthem to the British attack upon Fort McHenry in the battle of 1812. They made the mistake of doing this while Frances Scott Key was watching, and he wrote down what he saw. I recently discovered that the surname McHenry is one my ancestral names, and not unlike the citizens of many countries, I am filled with pride when I hear the national anthem of my country.

El himno nacional estadounidense es muy difícil cantar. Hay varias notas muy agudas.

The American national anthem is very difficult to sing. There are several very high notes.

Slaughtering national anthems should be an Olympic sport, no? - jrschenk, Aug 20, 2016
I think the Australian anthem is easier to sing and more beautiful. - mstivers, Aug 20, 2016
I know someone that really did a good job with it. :) - rac1, Aug 20, 2016
It's a good idea for singers to have the first measure pitched in a key as low as they can comfortably go, then the later part of the song, and its high notes, will not pose as much of a problem♫. - Esteban_317, Aug 21, 2016

The 4th stanza of Francis Scott Key's poem serves as a second * verse to the US national anthem. Unfortunately it is rarely sung.

enter image description here

La cuarta estrofa de Francis Scott Key del poema sirve como un segundo * verso en el himno nacional de los Estados Unidos. Lamentablemente, rara vez es cantada.

* O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand; Between their lov’d home and the war’s desolation! Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the heav’n rescued land; Praise the power that hath made, and preserv’d us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto - “In God is our trust,” And the ?? star-spangled banner ? in triumph shall wave; O’er the land of the ??free and the home of the brave.?? ??????????????????????????????????????????????

Don't sing your National Anthem too loudly, it will offend some people if you do that.

No canta cantes tu himno nacional en voz demasiado alta, será ofender a algunas personas si lo haces.

"La Bandera Estrellada" no fue adoptada como el himno nacional estadounidense hasta 1931. Antes de eso, muchas otras canciones patrióticas fueron considerados himnos informales.

"The Star-Spangled Banner" was not adopted as the United States national anthem until 1931. Before that, many other patriotic songs were considered informal anthems.

Clotilde Arias' version of the Star-Spangled Banner benefited from the fact that she was both a translator & a composer. The version she submitted is almost identical in content to the English version while still keeping the rhythm of the original intact. - Esteban_317, Aug 21, 2016
I'm sure it isn't. Kind of like the same as trying to translate poetry. :) - rac1, Aug 21, 2016

Cuando uno monta un evento deportivo internacional, es importante sonar el himno nacional correcto. Sí, es posible que algunos en la audiencia no puedan discernir la diferencia, pero sin duda los atletas han oído el correcto más de una vez antes.

When you put on an international sporting event, it is important to play the correct national anthem. Yes, maybe some in the audience can't tell the difference, but without a doubt the athletes have heard the correct one more than once before.

Lo odio cuando una cantante popular se le pide que cante el himno nacional y lo canta como una canción de pop.

I hate it when a pop singer is asked to sing the national anthem and they sing it like a pop song.
