How do I say "a newer one" - if I wanted to say "They are going to buy a newer one in the city" - would this be correct: - Van a comprar uno más nuevo en la ciudad-

"They are going to buy a newer one in the city"

Van a comprar uno más nuevo en la ciudad

This sentence sounds good to me, as long as your antecedent is masculine or indeterminate.

If you had a feminine antecedent, you would need to change it to match.

No me gusta esta camisa. Voy a comprar una nueva en la ciudad.

Bosque, Very good answer, Bosque, but shouldn't it be: " VAN a comprar una 'más' nueva en la ciudad " as the femimine alternative ? - FELIZ77, Aug 19, 2016
That would be the case if I was going to put an equivalent, then I would have also needed No les gusta esta camisa. I just gave a sentence that would involve a feminine that I might say. :) - bosquederoble, Aug 19, 2016
I don't normally buy newer things, I buy new things. Unless I want antiques I suppose. :D - bosquederoble, Aug 19, 2016
Fair comment, :) - FELIZ77, Aug 19, 2016
One might sell an old farmhouse and buy a newer house in the city. - AnnRon, Aug 20, 2016
You might even sell an old second hand car and buy a newer one ;) - FELIZ77, Aug 20, 2016
Okay, point made. But I am not going to buy a used shirt. Although I know people do. ;) - bosquederoble, Aug 20, 2016
I knew someone once who claimed he donated all his jackets to goodwill and bought them back after they readied them for sale, because it was cheaper than the drycleaners, but I don't know if that was true. - bosquederoble, Aug 20, 2016

Hello Clara,

Welcome to the SpanishDict forum smile

You asked:

How do I say "a newer one" - if I wanted to say "They are going to buy a newer one in the city" - would this be correct: - Van a comprar uno más nuevo en la ciudad-

You can say either:

1 Van a comprar uno más nuevo en la ciudad (masculine form)

2 Van a comprar una más nueva en la ciudad.(feminine form)

Which version you choose really depends on which noun is being substituted: if it is a masculine noun as in your example, eg un coche you would use the masculine form , or eg, una casa you would use the feminine form wink

I hope this helps wink
