eternizar ( eh-tehnr-nee-sahr' )

verb ( to immortalize, to drag out )

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

To my ear, "to drag out" is transitive, and we want the intransitive "to drag on." - jtaniel, Aug 12, 2016
Hola a todos. :) De nada chico y Ian. xoxo - rac1, Aug 12, 2016
I thought that too, Jtaniel, but I just copied what they gave me. They made other mistakes, perhaps that one is a mistake too. - rac1, Aug 12, 2016

Por años, la estatua "Lucy Miedo" fue burlado por ser una réplica muy pobre de Lucille Balle. Recientemente una estatua nueva fue erigido, eternizado la actriz como se merece.

For years, the "Scary Lucy" statue was mocked as a very poor replica of Lucille Ball. Recently a new statue was erected, immortalizing the actress as she deserves.

"Celebridades" is a feminine noun. Rather, use "han sido eternizadas." - Oshnaj, Aug 12, 2016

Surpuesto porcu :-)! - Jraider, Aug 12, 2016
I wouldn't use "more or less" and "very" to modify the same adjective, but maybe I'm missing something. - AnnRon, Aug 12, 2016
No, you're not missing anything Ann. Porcu has been doing so well, I just let that go. Thanks. - rac1, Aug 13, 2016

Some people immortalise themselves but others let fate do it for them.

Algunas personas se eternizar sí mismos pero otros dejan al destino que lo haga por ellos.

No voy a ser inmortalizado por mi habilidad en español.¡ Que lástima !

¡Pero que es correcto!

I will not be immortalized because of my proficiency in Spanish. What a pity !

But that figures! enter image description here

América Latina ha padecido el mal endémico de encumbrar a caudillos carismáticos o líderes, que, en épocas de crisis, seducen a las masas, y una vez que están en el gobierno, se declaran indispensables y se eternizan en el poder.

Latin America has long been plagued by the endemic illness of being ruled by charismatic caudillos or strongmen leaders, who, in times of crisis, seduce the masses, and once they are in government, they declare they are essential and perpetuate themselves in power.

Enough time has to pass... for example, about half of the population hated Lincoln with a passion. - mstivers, Aug 13, 2016
Maybe one day. - rac1, Aug 13, 2016
Mstivers is right- Lincoln paid for his efforts to end slavery(once the Civil War started) with his life. His sacrifice and that of the 350,000 who died for the North are not given due credit today for ending slavery in the USA. - Esteban_317, Aug 13, 2016
I don't know that gerrymandering had yet stacked the deck so heavily in favor of one party in those days or that so many of those elected to govern were so uninterested in doing so. - AnnRon, Aug 13, 2016
