This basically gets down to the difference between el and lo:
Lo as a neuter article makes it an abstract concept- the wild, what is wild, that which is wild.
El makes it a definable (masculine) thing- the savage (male), the brute, the wild one.

As a neuter definite article: The definite articles in Spanish, typically el and la when singular, are the equivalent of the English "the." Lo can be used as a neuter definite article before an adjective to make an abstract noun. For example, lo importante can be translated as "the important thing," "that which is important" or "what is important."

Lo salvaje refers to a wild thing. El salvaje refers to a wild person.
There's a trick. If you say "el salvaje" it means a savage person but you add "el mundo salvaje" it means the savage world.
