tratar de o tratarse de as "to be about"

I think I may have asked this before, but I can't find it now. Anyway, Spandict provides some of the following examples:

Vt) tratarse, to be about, No se trata de dinero.

Vi) tratar, to be about, ¿De qué trata el documental?

V pro) tratarse, to be about, ¿De qué se trata? Se trata de la nueva piscina.

The more I study these examples the more confused I get. To what extent, if at all, are tratar and tratarse interchangeable?

Would the following also be correct?: 1. Trata de dinero. 2.¿De qué se trata el documental? 3.

Tratarse

Applying that to the examples given in SpanDict (which I set forth with my question), why "se trata de la nueva piscina"? Isn't piscina something specific? - malbecblend, Aug 7, 2016

In your examples, I would use tratarse because it seems that they are about something. The film / documentary scenario, however, could be said with just tratar if the idea is to say that a film / documentary reflects something or even if it disputes something. Previous sentences can also indicate which form of tratar to use in these cases.

I am not sure I followed your answer. Are you saying that tratarse is acceptable in ALL of the examples and that trata could ALSO be used in the film/documentary examples? - malbecblend, Aug 7, 2016

Trata de/ versa sobre : When you are speaking about a determinated thing.

Tratarse de: When you are speaking about a situation and you are asking for or explaining information or instructions.

La madre-¿De que trata la película? .

the purpose is to see a film that tries to nice things
