Is there a preferred way to ask a question
Is it more correct to ask tienes planes para hoy rather than tienes hoy algún plan for the question do you have planes for today? Or are they same thing and there is always more than one way to ask a question?

Good question! 
You can say: ¿Tienes algún plan para hoy (esta noche)?
Do you have any plans for today (tonight)?
There isn't necesarily a set way to ask a question as in a set verbal construction like the French often use the construction Est ce que to begin a question:
Est ce-que nous allons faire des provisions ce matin?
Are we going to do the shopping this morning?
It really depends what you want to ask! However, be careful not to translate the English word 'do' in Spanish or French ...it has no direct equivalent and questions are simply translated directly without it!
Eg: Do you want to come to my house, tomorrow to play tennis?
= ¿Quieres venir a mi casa mañans para jugar al tenis?
It is important when writing questions in Spanish to remember to use the interrogation marks at the beginning and end of a sentence, as I have illustrated in my examples above! The first question mark is always inverted!
Obviously, as in French and many other languages, when these questions are spoken you indicate that you are asking a question using the proper intonation ( the correct pitch ie: rise and fall of your voice!)

There's no always a unique way to ask a question. It all depends on what we want to put the focus on.
- ¿Tienes planes para hoy? (= focus on planes. The plan is more important than the day.)
- ¿Tienes hoy algún plan? (= focus on hoy. The day is more important than the plan.)
