Why not me gusto ?

Why not me gusto ?

Hi mates

I am confusing about the phrase "me gusta una manzana" means I like an apple . But why the verb gustar is conjugated by 3rd person but not 1st person.

If it means I like it, should it be conjugated as "gusto una manzana" instead of "me gusta una manzana"

As fas as I understand. Me gusta una manzana can be understood as "an apple please me", right ??

Thanks

" I am confused " And yes Dang , read it as The apple pleases me . then you will see that it is correct. - ray76, Aug 4, 2016
Ray is correct, the apple is pleasing to me. :) - bosquederoble, Aug 4, 2016
Your sentence " I am confusing" is saying that "you " are confusing us. so change it to " I am confused B Y this phrase " . " - ray76, Aug 4, 2016
"Or the phrase " is OK . - ray76, Aug 4, 2016

There are several verbs like "gustar" and if you know how to handle "gustar" you will be able to handle the others.

First of all, "gustar" mean "to please" or "to be pleasing to"

It works backwards from the English verb "to like" In the English sentence "I like hamburgers." "I" is the subject, "like" is the verb, and "hamburgers" is the direct object.

In Spanish there is no transitive verb "to like" That happens in a few other languages as well. In my "hamburgers" sentence you have to say it in Spanish like this.

To me hamburgers are pleasing (or hamburgers please me)

You may preface it with an "a" phrase, thus. "A mí me gustan las hamburguesas"

For "you" like (familiar) it's (a ti) te gustan las hamburguesas.

For he/she likes it's: (a él/a ella) le gustan las hamburguesas.

To say that María or José likes something you HAVE to use the "a phrase"

"A María /José le gustan las hamburguesas."

To say that they both like them use: A María y Jose les gustan las hamburguesas.

To say we like hamburgers: (A nosotros) Nos gustan las hamburguesas.

To say that "they" like hamburgers, use (a ellos/ellas) les gustan las hamburguesas.

To say that you (plural) like hamburgers: use "a ustedes-(Latin America) les gustan las hamburguesas.

Same thing in Spain. "A vosotros os gustan las hamburguesas"

To speak of a group, use "A los americanos, a los chicos, a mis hermanos, etc., les gustan las hamburguesas.

Now that you've got "gustar" here's a link to a list of verbs like ''gustar" and how to use them.

I forgot to add that for singular subjects like "Mexican food" or the Spanish language, "gustar" will be in the singular form. Me gusta la comida italiana. With verbs also use the singular form no matter how many verbs. Me gusta tocar música y cantar. - Daniela2041, Aug 4, 2016
