Dizzy,

It all depends on context in Spanish and many other languages. We can say many short expressions in English and the meaning remains the same whatever the context. Spanish is not like that, it all depends on the other words in the sentence because context is critical in determining (deciding) the meaning! wink

The problem with your sentence is that the word for can be translated differently according to what you mean by for in the words "for your sweetest smiles". In English these words can be used as they stand but to accurately translate them into Spanish we need to clearly understand the idea you are trying to translate into Spanish.

Translation is not simply about simply translating word for word, which seldom works but accurately trying to communicate your idea in the same way as the natives do.

Do you mean:

1.I would do anything for (ie: in exchange for) one of your sweetest smiles ?

Haría todo (cualquier cosa) por una de tus sonrisas más bonitas

I would do anything for (ie: in order to receive) one of your sweetest smiles ?

Haría todo (cualquier cosa) para recibir una de tus sonrisas más bonitas

2.Thank you for one of your sweetest smiles ?

Muchas gracias por una de tus sonrisas más bonitas

3 For (ie because) one of your sweetest smiles is more precious to me than anything (everything) on earth (anything in the world)?

Porque una de tus sonrisas más bonitas me vale más que todo en el mundo.

etc...

I hope that you can see that all these sentences are translated differently according to what you are trying to say. There is no one expression like in English that can be used in all situations! wink When many English speaking people learn a foreign language they mistakenly think that you can use the same words in any context and the meaning remains the same...this invraiably does not work!

I hope this helps smile

FELIZ77 I learn a lot from your explanation. I didn't know Spanish is that different from English. "Context" is the key. What an important lesson! Gracias - dizzyremy, Jul 27, 2016
You are welcome, Dizzy :) I would have givne the best answer to Daniela myself as her answer is spot on /exactly right She is a native Spanish speaker and has answered your question precisely 1 Please make sure that you have given her a big thank you - FELIZ77, Jul 27, 2016

I would use "por" (because of or "in exchange for") por tus sonrisas más dulces.

Dani, I thought that dulce is used more commonly used to describe food than smiles but perhaps I am wrong - FELIZ77, Jul 26, 2016
I have seen dulce to mean sweet in the same figurative sense it is used in English. :) - bosquederoble, Jul 26, 2016
okay, Bosque perhaps you are right :) - FELIZ77, Jul 26, 2016
I never know if it is regional, we experience different regions, and Mexican Spanish is sometimes influenced by English. - bosquederoble, Jul 26, 2016
Hmmmph! - Daniela2041, Jul 26, 2016
Not sure how quite to interpret that one. :) - bosquederoble, Jul 26, 2016
Dani, ¿Qué significa hmmmph, por favor? - FELIZ77, Jul 26, 2016
Significa que parece que dudan mi español. This use of "dulce" is universal. It's even in a lot of songs. Christian hymns, even. "Dulce Consuelo" is the Spanish version of "Blessed Assurance." - Daniela2041, Jul 27, 2016
I;m really sorry if it seemed that way to you, Dani my friend. I was not doubtng that dulces was correct I just thought that it was a regional choice: dulces o bonitas but I was wrong sorrym, again! - FELIZ77, Jul 27, 2016

Feliz has given you a lot of good advice on proper grammar.

Trying to give you an answer that meets the spirit of what I think you are saying:

Por tu sonrisa tan dulce.

As Feliz notes, if you use para, the smile is the recipient of the present. Para ti por tu sonrisa tan dulce. The por indicates in exchange for/because of.

Por tu sonrisa tan dulce= In exchange for (recognition of)/because of your smile so sweet.

I am not a native speaker, rather an intermediate level learner, so I do not know if there is a more natural way. Maybe a native speaker will comment.

Thank you, Bosque :) Does the part I would do anything look right to you? - FELIZ77, Jul 26, 2016
I would go with the cualquier cosa for anything, todo to me= everything, but I didn't see anything that looked incorrect in anything you wrote. :) - bosquederoble, Jul 26, 2016
Thank you Bosque, sometimes I just lack confidence - FELIZ77, Jul 26, 2016
Yes, bosquederoble, por is the right word. To be honest, I do have a hard time figuring out the differences between por and para - dizzyremy, Jul 27, 2016

Hello Dizzy,

Welcome to the SpanishDict forums. smile

You asked:

How do you say "for your sweetest smiles" in Spanish? (1) para tus mas dulces sonrisas (2) para tus sonrisas mas dulces, or neither? Thank you.

Please could you provide some context for your expression? It would be most helpful if you would give us some idea how you intend to use it! wink

Ex: I would do anything for one of your sweetest smiles! wink

(Yo) Haría todo (o cualquier cosa) por una de tus sonrisas más bonitas.

I believe that you would use por in this context because you are talking about in exchange for one of your sweetest smiles!

I think that it may possible to use para like this

(Yo) Haría todo (o cualquier cosa) para recibir una de tus sonrisas más bonitas.

I am an intermediate Spanish student and am not fluent yet. The native and fluent speakers on this forum like Daniela, Luis, Pablo, Astoxtua and Julian Chivi may well come up with something better.

I hope this helps smile

FELIZ77, Thank you for the detailed explanation. I am a beginner in Spanish, so there are lots of confusions whenever I look up the sentences in different English-Spanish online dictionaries. They tend to come up with different translations, and I have no idea which one is correct, or maybe none of them is.

Here is the story:
I bought a gift for a girl, and I want to write "for your sweetest smiles" in Spanish on the card attached to the gift. Can you tell me what I should write?

Muchas Gracias

The reason why you receive different options can vary some translations can be more accurate than others and as I said above there can be several correct options all depending on context (all the other words that appear in a sentence!) - FELIZ77, Jul 26, 2016
