mareo ( mah-reh'-oh )

noun ( motion sickness, nausea )

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

En la marina de guerra, un hombre se cree que ha adquirido sus "piernas de mar" cuando él deja de vomitar sobre el lado de la nave (el mareo es para cangrejos de tierra--civiles).

In the navy, a man is said to have acquired his "sea legs" when he quits puking over the side of the ship (motion sickness is for land crabs--civilians).

Solamente mirar este tipo de cuadros me da mareo, por eso prefiero no colgarlos en mi casa.

Only watching these types of pictures makes me dizzy, so I'd rather not hang them in my house.

Tengo mareo en un mar en calma, pero no en un mar agitado. ¿Porque es eso?

I have motion sickness on a smooth sea ,but not on a rough sea. Why is that?

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with being an Aussie... everything upside down, and all... :D - jrschenk, Jul 21, 2016
Because in the rough sea, you are concentrating on something else, like surviving. lol - rac1, Jul 21, 2016
I like her observation better. :) - jrschenk, Jul 21, 2016
I think that you are correct Amber , thanks. - ray76, Jul 21, 2016

La sensación de mareo, o quizás sea más apropiado decir la cinetosis, con frecuencia ocurre cuando hay una discordancia entre la información que el sistema vestibular proporciona al cerebro y la que los ojos proporciona- y por eso a veces es mejor ver el horizonte para hacer que la información se iguale.

The sensation of dizziness, or perhaps it would be more appropriate to say motion sickness, frequently occurs when there is a discordance between the information that the vestibular system provides the brain and that that the eyes provide- and so sometimes it is better to look at the horizon to cause the information to match.

Es difícil atrapar un pez si tu tienes te mareas en el barco.

It's hard to catch a fish if you are seasick on the boat.

Sufro de mareo si paso demasiado tiempo mirando a una pantalla de ordenador. Tengo que usar gafas especiales.

I suffer from nausea if I spend too much time looking at a computer screen. I have to wear special glasses.

La única vez que he sentido nunca en lo más mínimo del mareo estaba mientras encerrada en un baño. Tan pronto como salí del baño, el mareo salió de mí.

The only time I've ever felt the least bit of seasickness was while shut inside a head. As soon as I came out of the head, the seasickness left me.

Nunca en la vida he sufrido un ataque de mareo. Me dicen que tengo un estomago de iron.

Never in my life have I suffered an attack of seasickness or nausea. I'm told that I have a stomach of iron.

Deseo que supe que mi amiga tenía mareo de movimiento antes de que conseguíamos en el paseo

Nunca olvidaré la única vez que sufrí del mareo... estaba en un barco mirando ballenas.

I will never forget the only time I got seasick... I was on a boat watching whales.
