What does al mean in this sentence?

Question

Al niño le gusta el fútbol.

The above sentence is supposed to translate into "The boy likes football." But I thought Al, which is a contraction of a and el, is supposed to mean "to the". So why does Al just mean "the" in the above sentence? Please help, thanks.

Literally, "To the boy football is pleasing. The "le" which means "to him" is also necessary in Spanish. English speakers call it the redundant "le"

To put it another way, Spanish is the only language that puts the indirect object AND the indirect object pronoun in the same sentence.

Your translation is very commonly incorrect. Gustar means to please. The correct translation is "Football pleases the boy". Once you understand how gustar works, you can say like if you want, but it´s grammatically incorrect even though the general meaning is the same.

The A in this case directs the action from the subject "football" to the indirect object "the boy" (a el niño), which is contracted to "al niño".
