aduana ( ah-dwah'-nah )

noun ( customs; duty )

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Si Papa Noel está retenido en la aduana los niños van recibir los regalos con mucho retraso.

If Santa Claus is retained at customs children will receive gifts with a big delay.

Luggage is checked through customs more thoroughly than the people carrying it.

El equipaje es controlada por la aduana más a fondo que las personas que llevan a ello.

La mayor parte de la carga que se mueve a través de la aduana cada día es legal, pero no todo.

Much of the cargo that moves through customs every day is legal, but not all of it.

aduana

Cueste lo que cueste, intenten esquivar a aduana en Miami. Es una agonía. Pero he oído que es aún peor JFK.

At all costs, try to avoid customs in Miami. It is a nightmare. But I've heard that JFK is even worse.

Muchos aeropuertos internacionales tienen tiendas donde se pueden comprar artículos libres de aduana.

Many internacional airports have stores where you can buy duty-free items.

En la armada es común asignarles deberes colaterales a los oficiales de un barco, y por eso me mandaron a formación para ser un oficial de aduanas. Aprendí cómo distinguir el marfil de una morsa de el marfil de un elefante y la piel de un cocodrilo de la piel de un avestruz y tales cosas, pero la verdad es que ya no recuerdo nada de eso.

In the Navy it is normal to assign collateral duties to the officers of a ship, and so they sent me to training to be a customs officer. I learned how to tell walrus ivory from elephant ivory and crocodile skin from ostrich skin and such things, but the truth is that I no longer remember any of that.

"(Do you have) Anything to declare, Madame?" asked the customs officer very suspiciously!

"Err no, nothing at all to declarel!" replied the old lady with a smile, but the five snakes (pythons) that escaped from her suitcase told another story!

This lady is now helping police with their enquiries! wink

" ¿Tiene Ud algo que declarar, señora? Preguntó la aduanera* con mucha desconfianza.

"Err no, ¡nada que declarar!" Respondió la vieja con una sonrisa, ¡pero los cinco serpientes pitones que escaparon de su maleta dió (o contó) otra cuento!

¡Ahora la policía está interrogando a esta señora! wink

o la agente /o la official de aduanas*

Corrijan mi español si es necesario, por favor smile
