This is an example where most Spanish sentences are required to have a clause. The use of que makes the proper connectedness.

The same happens with expressions like I think I'll go. Many English sentences don't use that to make a clause but Spanish ones need to have it. Namely:

I think I'll go (= creo que iré; NOT creo iré), and
Aquí están los libros te prometí.
