¿Qué hacía tu mamá o papá cuando él o ella tenía cinco años? I just need clarification on what this says... I believe it's asking "What did your mother or father make when he or she was five years old?"

I think it actually says "What did your mother or father do when he or she was five years old?"

In Spanish the verb hacer is equivalent to the verb "to make" or "to do". Spanish uses one verb for both of those English verbs, though in English, the two aren't so similar in usage or meaning.

In this case, unless they are talking about something your parents created at five years old, in any other context, the verb "to do" is the best choice.

I agree with cmusba.

However, your Spanish sentence sounds strange, very anglosized. Thank god that in Spanish we are not slaves to "political correctness" as in English.

A more natural way of the Spanish variant: ¿Qué hacía cada uno de tus papás cuando tenían 5 años?
