There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Debido a que la ciudad de Copenhague no permite que otras ciudades tengan copias de su estatua famosa de La Sirenita, Vancouver Canadá tiene una estatua de una chica en un traje de buzo y mi esposa y yo la vimos mientras dábamos un paseo durante nuestra luna de miel hace muchos años.

Because the city of Copenhagen does not permit other cities to have copies of its famous Little Mermaid statue, Vancouver Canada has a statue of a girl in a wetsuit and my wife and I saw it while we were taking a walk during our honeymoon many years ago.

Apparently some mermaids are very high techies.

Según leyendas antiguas, se dice que sirenas cantan usando sus voces dulces para atraer hombres desprevenidos. Cuando llegan estos hombres, son atrapados por las sirenas. Sin embargo, se me olvidó lo que hacen con ellos...

According to ancient legends, it is said that sirens sing using their sweet voices to attract unsuspecting men. When these men arrive, they are trapped by the sirens. I forgot what they do to them, however...

Cerca de la costa en Napier, Nueva Zelanda se asienta la sirena Pania del arrecife. Near the shore in Napier, New Zealand sits the mermaid Pania of the Reef. The Pania of the Reef mermaid statue is clearly depicting her in her human form – with legs instead of a mermaid tail. Other notable mermaid statues that share this trait are the Havis Amanda mermaid statue in Finland, and the Undine mermaid statue in Austria.

Lotería is a game of chance, similar to bingo, but using images on a deck of cards instead of plain numbers on ping pong balls. One of these images is the siren.

¡Con los cantos de sirena no te vayas a marear: la sirena!

Don't be swayed by the songs of the siren: the siren!
