Why does the "ir" verb, zambullirse, for the 3rd person preterit, have an "ó" ending instead of a "ió"?

I believe that an unstressed i immediately following a root ending in ll, ñ or i (all of which have, essentially, an i sound) is always dropped.

Check the conjugation of gañir, engullir....
