I don't know how to express "it". Do I use él, or perhaps ella, or ello?

It can be confusing because in most cases "it" is not actually said, it is embedded in the verb. That is a big difference between English and Spanish and confuses people trying to do literal translations. For example to say "It is raining," in Spanish we just say "Llueve." That is the third person singular of the verb llover, to rain, and means he/she/it is raining. Another example - if we want to say "It is pretty," and the other person knows what thing we are talking about, we just say "Es bonita."
