Duolingo Ustedes
Hi, my name is Mibs and I just joined. I love Spanish. I was doing Duolingo when it marked me wrong when I translated "Ustedes" as you all or you guys. It said that the correct translation was just "you". Is that correct? I was taught that since there is an "-es" at the end of usted, it means them because ustedes is the plural form of usted, which means he or she. I know that in Spain, the vosotros form of a verb is used to indicate you all or you guys, while ustedes is used in all other Latin countries to indicate you all or you guys as well as they. In Spain, ustedes only means they, the boys, the girls, the group of people. Thanks for your answers.

I think it's because "you-all" or "you guys" is considered as incorrect English. I use "you-all" in my classes all the time but inform the students that it is considered as slang or regional. When you were informed that Ustedes like vosotros was just "you" they should have added "you plural."
Once you have asked a question or posted an answer you can not delete it. You CAN ask the moderators to do it for you. I have had to ask them several times and they granted my request.
Duolingo is peppered with these questions. Users need to be aware that DL's translation database is manually programmed. As such it is often limited, but accuracy can be ensured. Sure, "Ustedes" could translate to "You all / You guys / Y'all" etc. but it does translate to "You." There is no plural of "you" in standard English, so don't make one if you want DL to mark your translation as correct. Note: I have seen "Y'all" creep into the DL database, no doubt from weight of suggestion by those in parts of the States where it is standard :(
Anyway, another note from someone who has come to SD from DL: In the Duolingo discussions showing your appreciation for answers is somewhat discouraged and by some is considered clutter. The same is not true on SD, and those who take the time to answer questions really appreciate being appreciated. You can do this by commenting on their answer, upvoting it, and marking the best answer as such - You could go ahead and tick the "mark as best answer" box for Daniela's answer now ![]()
Great answer from Daniela but just to be clear Usted never means he/she and Ustedes never means they. It is just conjugated the same way but it is not interchangeable.
I was taught that since there is an "-es" at the end of usted, it means them because ustedes is the plural form of usted, which means he or she.
This is not correct. Ustedes has nothing to do with "them", which is ellos(as).
Vosotros / ustedes are both plural of you. The difference is conjugation and that vosotros is a familiar form and ustedes is formal form. Because ustedes is the only form used in the Americas, there is no familiar / formal issue.
If you want to delete your post, without moderators you can go to "edit" and delete the text but you still need at least one word of text, ie: "deleted" but the post itself will still remain.
Hey guys I still need an answer, but I want to know how I can delete a question or answer in the future
