Dealing with spam

Question

I have been deleting content from spam posts. In particular, I want to remove links, because if people click links in spam, the spammers win.

If this is the wrong thing to do, I trust that the mods will tell me to stop. If it's the right thing to do, perhaps others will join my campaign?

Bosque has suggested in another post their aim may just be to [artificially] appear to increase traffic to their own site. If so, I do not know the most effect way to deal with them.
