How to translate "extrañado"

Question

Im a native spanish speaker and trying to translate an specific paragraph for recreation (I do this often). In a part of this book a lady asks a question to a man and he -"Oh, esque yo nunca conocí a un gitano antes" Responde extrañado.

This is not in the context of "to miss", but in the context of "extrañeza". Many translation websites suggest:

strangeness estrangement alienation oddness surprise amazement

I am not satisfied with any of those. Maybe "Odness" but then, how do you translate "responde extrañado" if "replied odded" does not exist because "odded" is not an actual word.. I tried "replied in odness" but it is not quite the same as in spanish, "responde con extrañeza" maybe that is the winner so far, unless that you, beautiful people of this community, could think of something else.

My first thoughts would be: disconcerted or taken aback. Maybe unsettled, perplexed or bewildered.

It seems to me that grammatically, extrañado is being used (in a somewhat unusual construction) adjectivally, describing the man who responds. In English, an equivalent might be something like He replies, surprised or He replies, amazed.

But your interpretation is that extrañado is being used to describe the response as odd, not the responder as surprised or amazed. The English equivalent there might be to use the adverb oddly.

Or I might be way off base. Perhaps more context (preceding and succeeding sentences from the original?) would help.
