Is this a proper way of writing gustar?

Le gusta correr. Word for word is: "to him is pleasing to run" Inasmuch as Spanish has no direct translation for "to like" we use the verb "gustar" which means "to be pleasing"

In English your sentence would be. "My father is smart and young. He likes to run."

So your construction is correct.
