sutil ( soo'-teel )

adjective ( subtle; delicate, light )

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Hay una diferencia sutil entre las dos palabras , pero hay una diferencia enorme entre el significado de ellas.

There is a subtle difference between the two words, but there is a huge difference between the meaning of them.

En inglés, la “b” en la palabra “subtle” es muy sutil, quizás incluso muda, pero en esta imagen, me pregunto si de manera sutil se quiere evocar con la “b” otra palabra inglesa que empieza con “b”.

In English, the “b” in the word “subtle” is very subtle, perhaps even silent, but in this image, I wonder if in a subtle manner the “b” is meant to evoke another English word that begins with “b”.

Especially when you are taught to "sound out" a word you are learning to spell. - rac1, May 24, 2016
I'm just glad I am learning a language that follows a predictable correlation between how something is written and how it is pronounced. :) - bosquederoble, May 24, 2016

Pablo tragó su pastilla de morfina. El dolor ya era algo más sutil, más auguantable. ¡ Pero qué día más raro tuvo !Empezó el día como preso en la cárcel y acabó como otro típo de prisoniero, ya en el hospital, fijado al gotero. La comida del hospital era mejor y la morfina le hizo sentirse bien relajado.

Pablo swallowed his morphine pill. The pain was a bit gentler now, easier to bear. But what a day he had had! He had started off as an inmate of a prison and finished as a sort of prisoner in hospital, tied to a drip. The food in hospital was better and the morphine made him feel rather relaxed.

The delicate skin of the baby was as soft as the finest of silks, and as white as the cleanest snow, she had dark black hair that reminded me of a cold winters night. she also had the bluest of eyes of a summers day.

La sutil piel del bebé era tan suave como los mejores de sedas y blancos como los más limpios de nieve, ella tenía oscuro cabello negro que me recordaba a inviernos fríos por la noche. Ella también tenía el azul de los ojos de un días de verano.

The harpsichord has a keyboard and a shape like a piano, but has a more delicate sound.

@Jraider: Look on You Tube for Scott Ross, the late harpsichordist. You'll hear why this instrument was so loved. Modern tuning has made it "tinny". - Jubilado, May 24, 2016
I know you probably play this instrument too. :) - rac1, May 24, 2016
Rarely. Harpsichords are very fragile and need a lot of maintenance including DAILY TUNING! If I need a harpsichord sound I use an electronic keyboard. - mstivers, May 25, 2016

Seguí los sonidos sutiles de agua alrededor de la curva en la camino. Mientras me movió de entre los árboles, vi la cascada goteanda.

I followed the subtle sounds of water around the curve in the path. As I moved out of the trees, I saw the trickling waterfall.

No entra en una argumento con un filósofo a menos que puedas hacer sutiles diferencias entre ideas y conceptos.

Don't get into an argument with a philosopher unless you can make subtle distinctions between ideas and concepts.
