It was Obama's slogan to the Hispanics in his first election bid.

"Sí se puede" (Yes, it can be done--as opposed to English "Yes we can.')

(Disclamer: I am not a fan of Obama--but he IS the Pres.)

It's a general statement, effectively regarding "one's" ability or permission to do some action. English uses "one" or "you" referring to an anonymous, general person.

For example: "You can see the stars clearly from the mountaintop." or "One can see the stars clearly from the mountaintop."

Can be said: "Se puede ver claramente las estrellas desde la cima de la montaña."

Hope this helps. ?

It is often used as a question, if , for example you want to open a door to get into a bar that might be closed, you say '¿ Se puede?''

As nataniel says, it is apassive construction, a set phrase really. It is useful, learn it by heart!

I would be careful about conjugating se puede. You can conjugate poder all you like, but se puede is a passive construction and is always in the third person.

Please use correct English (spelling, punctuation, capitalization) when posting on this site. It is a language learning site. And please complete your profile.

Si se puede means Yes, it can be done, you use it to say that something can be done. Me: Yo puedo votar, tengo 21 años (I can vote, i have 21 years/I´m already 21) I´m not entirely sure if is writen correctly. You: Tu puedes hacerlo, confío en ti (You can do it, I trust in you) To ¿encourage? someone before he/she does something. He: El puede ir sólo a la escuela, sabe como hacerlo.(He can go to school alone, he knows how to [he already knows how to?]) i´m not sure how to say it in english, She: Ella puede ir sóla a la escuela, sabe como hacerlo. (same as the one before) They: Ellos pueden ganar el partido, han entrenado/practicado muy duro (they can win the... ¿match? the have been practicing very hard. Us: Nosotros podemos comer pizza hoy, hay promoción hoy. (Podemos implies that we can, so the word "nosotros" isn´t necessary, the right sentence will be: Podemos comer pizza hoy, hay promoción.

Hope it helped smile
